Forehand

The forehand (the shot played on your right side if you are right-handed) is probably the most basic shot in tennis. During practice, most people use it to bring the ball into play. In matches this is done with a serve.

When we have a look at possible grips, swings, hitting stances and contact points, there are hundreds of ways to hit this shot. Let's have a look at the combinations that give you, as a beginner, the best results.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I have inserted videos and photos to help you get the most out of this page.

Here we go!

  • use an Eastern Forehand Grip
  • make a unit turn

  • drop the racket face at the end of the backswing
  • a forward swing that goes a good deal from low to high, ending near or over your left shoulder
  • a square - or 'neutral' hitting stance, shifting your weight from the back to the front foot

  • a contact point that is a bit ahead of your front foot at about hip-height
